The Lost Years: Batman or Nightwing?

It was about 5 years ago when I first read this comic series. Gramedia published the Indonesian version of the series into a compilation, as part of their<img style="width: 170px;height: 261px;" class="alignright" src="http://images.edwinlives4ever.multiply.com/image/1/photos/upload/300x300/SR0P9QoKCCoAAGv2Ao01/Lost-Years.png?et=8tkPIiRIPUX3R6RVFP4AqQ&amp;nmid=0" border="0"> Indonesian version of 'Batman Adventures' series.<br><br>The title 'The Batman Adventures: The Lost Years' sounds curious to me, and that was what attracted me to buy the book. I mean, the main events of the series had been depicted in previous DC series, albeit differently. Is it a re-boot? I mean, the history of Grayson's transformation from Robin into Nightwing is different in this limited series, so is Tim Drake's path into becoming the second Robin (yes, second Robin, as nothing was said about Jason Todd, the second Robin of the previous DC continuity; he didn't seem to exist at all in this series), and many other elements give hints of a re-boot. But it's not.<br><br>Take a closer look at the style. The drawing looks so similar to the animated TV series. The comic series Batman Adventures is a DC comic book series featuring Batman. It is d...

Savage Sword Of Conan

Lots and lots of Savage Sword Of Conan issues. Most are large files, not suitable for download for those with limited and slow internet connection.

Of course, for a true die-hard fan of Conan the Cimmerian barbarian, such an obstacle would only make it more interesting, am I right?

It was based on three stories of Frank Miller's comic series 'Sin City': 'The Big Fat Kill', 'That Yellow Bastard', and 'The Hard Goodbye'. Most of you comic readers have heard of the comic series, I'm sure, so I wouldn't talk about either the movie or the comic series. As a matter of fact, if you've read my previous post about Conan The Barbarian comic series, you would've seen tha this post is similar in nature. It's multiple links-sharing post.<br><br>Now if you're confused with the file extension (*.cbr.html or *.pdf.html), my advise is: don't be. Linux user will find it easy enough to delete the .html bit when saving the file. Windows users only have to make sure to uncheck the option 'Hide extensions for known file types' in the Folder Option, and do the same thing.<br><br>I hope you like this post, comic lovers.
Kill me now!

Yes, that's right. I mean it, every single word of the title. Kill me now!<br><br>I heard about this site <a href="http://www.foznawarabbilkakbah.com/">.:: SURAT PERNYATAAN ::.</a> from a friend, and so a I check it out. After reading it, I have to punch my own head several times to subdue my blinding rage. Those bastards! I don't give a damn if the letter was genuinely written by those three rabid dogs waiting for their execution in Nusakambangan or by some impersonator. It's the same to me. The message is clear enough, and to me this is an act of war.<br><br>So they call all people who share their view to avenge everybody who agrees with their execution? Fine. My answer is: Here I am. I am one of those who support the execution of Imam Samudra, Muklas, and Amrozi. Hell, I'm demanding the execution to be done ASAP! Kill the supporters of the execution? Here I am. Kill me now! You're welcome to give it a try.<br>

Uplink

I spent about £ 25.00 for this game, both Linux & Windows versions, and I should say that it was well-spent. This is arguably one of the best video games I've ever played. It was created by Introversion, a company who call themselves "The last of the bedroom programmers", whatever the hell it means.

First thing first, I classify this game in Simulation genre. Why? Because that's what it is. What's so special about it? There are so many Simulation games out there. True enough, but not like this one. I think Uplink is best described as simulation game of Hollywood depiction of computer hacking (OK, I believe the correct term here is cracking, but the term 'hacking' is used in the game to describe that particular activity, so 'hacking' it is). What the hell is Hollywood depiction of computer hacking? Lot's of graphic, less command line. Watch 'Swordfish' and 'Hackers', you'll know what I mean. Still, the hacking principle of this game is close enough to reality.

Gon by Masashi Tanaka

A little dinosaur living in the days of mammals? Cute idea. Want it to be your pet? Baaaaaaad idea. This little carnivorous dinosaur, innocent in a twisted way, would disembowel you for fun. Totally clueless, Gon is also a cunning strategist. However, he's also a fair character. Anybody who do him any service will be rewarded fairly. He also develops some sort of sense of brotherhood with some other species (penguin, eagle, etc).

This, my friend, is one of the view manga series I like. I like it for its detailed drawings and simple stories. No word in it, just cunning sequence painstakingly drawn in such a way that words would simply be

The Best Sequence In Charlie Chaplins's "The Kid"

Who's the best comedian of all time? Who's the best actor of all time? Who's the best filmmaker of all time? Who's the best musician of all time? Who's the best composer of all time? The answer to each of those questions may vary. Who's the best comedian-actor-filmmaker-musician-composer-combined of all time? Without doubt I'll answer: Sir Charles Spencer Chaplin, better known simply as Charlie Chaplin, one of the most influential person in the world's movie history.

Now, what's Chaplin's best film ever? That's a much more difficult question to answer. 'Modern Times'? 'City Lights'? 'Monsieur Verdoux'? 'The Great Dictator'?

My personal opinion, his best film is 'The Kid', a story about the tramp who found a baby and raised him (reluctantly at first) as his own kid; clumsily maybe, but still giving the kid the best he could. Chaplin as the tramp gave one of his best performance here, radiating a genuine compassion toward the kid, played by Jackie Coogan (who became the first child...

Actually, I only want to share several links to Marvel's comic adaptation of Robert E. Howards most intriguing, fascinating character, Conan, the barbarian of the mythical Hyborian Age. The series ran from 1970 until 1993, with Stan Lee as the editor.<br><br>OK, I know, I should've post this in the 'links' section.
Rogue Trooper, A Good Start Went Wrong

It was in late 1980s when I was first introduced to the comic strip 'Rogue Trooper'. I read it in Hai magazine who published it weekly (it was originally published in the British scifi-oriented 2000AD in 1981). I was intrigued by the impressive black-and-white graphic and the simple storyline of each episode.

Rogue is a Genetic Infantryman (GI), a genetically-engineered super-soldier created to fight the war between the Norts and Southers on the poisoned planet of Nu-Earth. Designed to be immune to all poisons, he was the only survivor when the G.I.'s were betrayed and ambushed in what would become known as the Quartz Zone Massacre. Rogue went A.W.O.L. (aided by the chips containing the personalities of his dead friends Gunnar, Bagman & Helm, each mounted on his gun, bag, and helmet, respectively) in order to hunt down the traitor who sent his friends to the massacre. Not a very complicated purpose, I know, but it leads to various adventures and some of them were real aces. Every we...

Love Thy Child...

Questo sì che è amore aka Last Night Of Christmas. What's so special about this 1978 Italian film directed by Filippo Ottoni? Well, I remember that there was a UNICEF Logo on the movie poster when I watched it many-many years ago. It means, it was recommended by UNICEF. It means there is a remarkable message in the film that made UNICEF interested.

The story is quite simple. Tommy (Sven Valsecchi) was a boy who suffered agamaglobulinemia, which means even the weakest virus would kill him, so he had to live in a sterile room designed especially for him in the hospital. His parents were separated, but they tried to hide the fact from him. Tommy suspected something was wrong when his father visit became less and less frequent. So he decided to compose a simple song and sent it to his father's TV show.

The clip here shows the father (Christopher George) and his reaction when he heard the voice of his abandoned child. His changing expression is quite remarkable.

To me, this song is...

Lessons From The Japanese Swords

First of all, I'm not an expert in metallurgy, and I have no formal training in this field either (of which the Japanese sword is arguably the finest example). My interest in the Japanese swords started many years ago when I saw an old halberd in my father's room. He told me jokingly that it was inhabited by a spirit of a white tiger. This halberd was later given to me, about 18 years ago, and I kept it in my study. Then in 1995, a friend of mine, Mas Bagyo (today he still teaches swordsmithing in STSI, Solo) saw it and expressed his desire to borrow and examine it. I said it was OK, so he brought it home. Three days later he returned it, and he excitedly told me that it was not a hallberd after all. The blade was a that of a wakizashi, and a signature on the nakago, tsuba (sworguard) and ornaments on the saya (scabbard) confirmed this. He also gave me a book about Japanese swords, and that's how it began. By reading the book I finally realized the blade of my halberd was actually...

A Tribute To Taxi Blues...

For a start, I only upload several, and the rest will follow whenever I can find the time. July to September is a busy period in my line of work, so bear with me if sometimes I made a mistake here and there in translating the text. Besides, translating accurately is literally impossible. You can only get close to accurate, but never 100% accurate.

Why am I doing this? I like Taxi Blues, and I have a hope that not only Indonesian-speaking readers will be able to enjoy it. English is a start. What's next?

And You Think Your Day Is Bad? Think Again...

Kawah Ijen, the crater of Ijen. It offers a beautiful scenery, and if you're fit enough for a 45-minute walk uphill to reach the crater, you're bound to see an even more beautiful sight. The crater is filled with turquoise-colored water, and the surrounding scenery gives you the impression of the beginning of creation.

One more interesting to see is the sulfur miners. Twice a day they carry the burden of about 70 kg of sulfur. Most of them look older than their actual age, due to sulfuric gas poisoning from years of mining.

The video is taken several days ago by my colleague Yusup, using my small Kodak digital camera. The voice over the footage is of Paul Neumann, who kindly contributed his even voice for this. Believe it or not, he did it without any script. He should've been a reporter.

Music Copy Right Violation In Indonesian Films?

<p style="margin-bottom: 0in;">The film 'Ayat-Ayat Cinta', is a successful film in Indonesia; or so I heard. I cannot really say I like or dislike the film, simply because I haven't watched it; I didn't even have any intention to. That's why when I heard that the film sort of hijacked the soundtrack of 'Legend Of The Fall' I didn't really care. However, for some unknown reasons my father in law wants to have the VCD/DVD, so Shari bought one for him. I was reading Herbert's 'Dune Messiah' in my bedroom as she watched the film, when suddenly I heard a familiar tune from the film. It was the song 'Twilight And Mist', and I remember perfectly that it was a soundtrack of the film 'Legend Of The Fall', starring Brad Pitt, Aidan Quinn, Julia Ormond, Anthony Hopkins, and Henry Thomas. My first thought was that it's a coincidence. Maybe both films coincidentally chose to use the same song. Several minutes later, another tune, which is also a part of the 'Legend Of The Fall' soundtrack was hear...

An Interview With Imam Tantowi

<p style="margin-bottom: 0in;">Several weeks ago I was contacted by Peter Tombs, a director &amp; writer, who was looking for an assistance in translating an interview with Imam Tantowi, one of Indonesia's outstanding directors. Most of Indonesian movie-goers and TV audiences have heard of Tantowi, of course. He had quite an achievement as director and writer. Just in case you didn't know Pete Tombs, he is the co-author (with Cathal Tohill) of <b>Immoral Tales: European Sex &amp; Horror Movies 1956-1984 - A History of the European Sex &amp; Horror Film</b>, a 1994 non fiction book that won the Bram Stoker Award for Best Non-Fiction, and Mondo Macabro - a look at the wilder side of world cinema. Tombs co-owns the UK based film, television and DVD production company, Boum Productions who produced the Eurotika and Mondo Macabro TV series for UK-based Channel Four Television. If you want to know more about him, you can read this <a href="http://www.sexgoremutants.co.uk/spot36.html">interview</a> with Pete Tombs and Andy Starke.</p> <p style="margin-bottom: 0in;">The following script depicts the c...

Nevan & Mbeek, reunited

I took Nevan to Prambanan again last Sunday. First thing he looked for was his friend, the one he named 'Mbeek'. It's quite a reunion they got, and the good thing is I got my camera battery fully-charged this time. Enigma's 'Return To Innocence' is appropriate for the scene, I think.

Too bad their reunion was cut short by an act of aggression. Well, at least they got this one

Love...

Love, such a simple yet meaningful word. If you think it exists only among humans, see these pictures and think again. I took these pictures of a female orangutan and her baby several months ago in Camp Leakey, Tanjung Puting National Park. I found the scene of the mother playing with her child touching, so I took the pictures.

I just love looking at these

Just another hobby...

Clay, wax, plaster, soft wood, whichever one is around when I have the mood and time, will turn into whatever crazy idea I have then; Arumbayan broken-ear idol from Tintin, dinosaurs, skulls, etc.

This one for example. I found a box of toy wax lying around, right when I remembered about an ad I read years ago in Singapore and an article about a pickled-dragon hoax. The ad was for alien-themed toys, and the hoax was about a dragon preserved in a jar. So i thought, "Why not making an alien in a jar?"

So here it is. I spent 15 minutes of my break to make it. As usual, I was too lazy to finish it. I haven't even spend the time to think of what liquid to pour into the jar. It should give the impression of formalin or any other liquid preservative, without the ability to ruin the wax. I was thinking of using a yellow-colored mouthwash, but I haven't had the chance to test its effect against
